We want to make residents aware that we have received multiple reports of counterfeit banknotes being used locally. In several cases, individuals have been selling items on Facebook Marketplace and other online platforms, accepting cash, and only later discovering that the money they received was fake.

Please remember: if you are selling items for cash, always check the notes before handing over your goods.

How to Check if a Banknote Is Genuine

Here are some quick, simple checks you can do when accepting cash:

1. Feel the Note

Genuine notes have a unique, crisp texture.

Raised print can usually be felt on areas such as “Bank of England”.

2. Look for Holograms & Foil Patches

Tilt the note to check if holographic images change.

3. Check the See‑Through Features

Most notes have transparent windows, metallic images, and detailed designs.

4. Use a UV Light (if available)

Genuine notes show fluorescent patterns under a UV lamp.

5. Compare With a Note You Know Is Real

If something feels “off”, trust your instincts.

Do not return the note to the person who gave it to you.

Do not attempt to pass it on—this is illegal even if you didn’t know at the time.

Make a note of:

The description of the person
The location, time, and circumstances

Report it to police via:

Our website under “Report Fraud/Counterfeit Currency”

You can also hand the note in at a local police station.
